My Drumming Journey
When I sat down to play my first drum set in my early teens, I knew this was the instrument I was destined to play. Moving full steam ahead, I enrolling in band class at school and took lessons from a very talented and respected teacher in the Northwest, Gary Williams. This is where I learned the foundations of drumming, which I still rely on today. I was also fortunate early on to find the wonderful world of live performance. Over the years, I have played with hundreds of musicians, been a member of a few bands, and was a worship director at my church for seven years. Live performing has allowed me to hone many skills including, playing to a room, improv, troubleshooting on the fly, and more. These days, I enjoy teaching drums, doing occasional studio work, and performing live whenever I can.

Testimonials
“Michael’s teaching was well received and many students looked forward to his visits. He had a gentle way of encouraging the students yet still kept them on task in a positive way…I think Michael could be a positive influence on young people in most any educational setting.”
-Robert Rink, Band Director
“Michael's skillful musicianship on the drum kit, creativity and ability to work well with other musicians and worshipers is second to none. We have played together in many worship services as well as collaborated in the recording studio to make some great music. Michael plays the drums as if it were his voice, or melodic instrument, always on rhythm with tremendous sensitivity to work together and blend with the musicians he is playing with. He is both an excellent leader and a follower at the same time!”

I’ve always been passionate about giving back, especially when it comes to music. My teaching career began volunteering at a local jr. high school, instructing students on percussion fundamentals including reading sheet music, stick technique, and more. This experience showed me just how rewarding helping others on their musical journey can be. I mostly teach kids, but I love teaching adults too. I teach a variety of players at different skill levels, tailoring each lesson syllabus to the student. My focus is centered around the drum set, although I do teach percussion on occasion.

No. You don’t need a drum set to take lessons, although it is highly recommended. All you need to get started is a pair of sticks and a practice pad of some kind. if you are looking for a starter set, I recommend the Drum Workshop Practice Set. This gives you the ability to practice playing drums without the noise and cost of a full drum set.
