the Tacoma Dome
2727 E D St,
Tacoma, WA 98421
My Tacoma landmark Illustration series wouldn’t be complete without the Tacoma Dome. This structure is one of the first things you see coming into downtown and has become an icon. My first experience of going to the dome was for a concert and I remember being awed by how big this building is. It’s one thing to see it from the highway, its a whole different experience standing underneath its wooden arches.
Constructed in 1983 for 44 million [about 106 million today], it's the largest wooden structure in Washington State and one of the largest in the world. It took 1.6 million board feet of lumber to construct - most of it coming from downed trees when Mount Saint Helens erupted in 1980. Over the years it’s housed many concerts and sporting events including David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, and even the Seattle SuperSonics during their 1994-95 season.
In 2018, The Tacoma Dome celebrated 35 years of serving the community and underwent a 30 million dollar facelift including new bleachers, restrooms and exterior treatments.
