Coffee Drinkers Money Saving Guide

The weather is getting colder, leaves are falling and Autumn is in full swing which can only mean one thing, it’s coffee season. Ok, for some of us though it’s coffee season year round. Still, as an avid coffee drinker myself, I’m all too familiar with the beating it can bring to our wallets. I’ve found some tricks that I personally use and hope will help you keep costs down. Here are my three tips for saving some cash on your next coffee fix.

Make your Coffee At Home

This is probably the most cost-effective thing you can do to get your coffee fix for the day. It’s something I’ve worked into my morning routine and look forward to daily. There are many ways to prepare coffee, the simplest being the coffee maker. I would guess most people use this method but I prefer a more hands-on, artisanal approach. My go-to coffee method is pour over, with french press coming in a close second. I will occasionally do stovetop espresso as well. I also prefer grinding my own beans - this gives me full control over grind size and keeps the coffee more fresh than pre-ground. I will usually get about two-three weeks of coffee per 12oz bag depending on how many drinks I make. This gives me between 20-25 cups per bag on average and at $12 a bag, that’s roughly 50-60 cents per cup - a significant saving when compared to coffee shop prices at around $2.50 a cup.

Bring your own Thermos or Ask for a House Mug

At some coffee shops like Starbucks, they will charge you extra if you get a to-go cup. If you bring your own thermos or ask for a house cup though it could save you 10 cents per drink. This is easy for me because I like drinking from a thermos or house mug, I think it makes the coffee taste better. Another added bonus is saving on all those cups going to the landfill making the environment and your wallet happy.

Card Savings and Point Perks

Look out for coffee shops that have punch cards or reward programs, this could get you free drinks and help you save money over time if you frequent them enough.

So there you have it, my round up of the best tools and tricks to save you some cash on your next coffee break. I hope you have found this guide helpful.
